Very special.

I didn't think it was comparable to, for example, Romeo + Juliet. That film modernized the well-known story, but only stuck to Shakespeare's texts. Fiennes goes a lot further and adopts the entire Roman model of society. This clashes like no other with the modern aspect of the film, which makes it nice and fresh and exciting. Enough potential to do a similar thing with other cultures, times and genres.

Furthermore, it is also remarkably hard, often beautifully filmed and strongly acted. The battle between Fiennes and Butler is definitely there. But the film loses itself a bit over time. The (political) middle part lasts a bit too long and the exile of Fiennes (the wandering around) also feels like an unnecessary chapter in the film. The film also goes wrong at the end. The very last scene may alleviate the pain somewhat, but Fiennes' corny surrender to his mother's pleas is absolutely unworthy of the film
. Fiennes would have put his own spin on this much better.

A pity because they take the sting out of the film, which was definitely present in the first 45 minutes. So there is work to be done, but the concept is really worth its weight in gold. Great contract between two worlds that, in our experience, absolutely do not belong together, but that is precisely where there is a lot of originality compared to other films.

The score is understandable in itself, but not a compliment to the previous voters. Definitely recommended for people who want to experience something different.

3.5*

Strange Drama / Thriller film, with the Roman era of the past in the present day, which is quite entertaining. The story is quite long-winded and the continuous talking in the form of Shakespeare's poetic texts was not really for me.

The William Shakespeare story (which revolves around revenge) is quite nicely put together and also manages to entertain, interest and captivate, but the ones who mainly make this story are the impressive, well-known cast including leading actor Ralph Fiennes (in the role of Caius Martius Coriolanus), Gerard Butler (in the role of Tullus Aufidius), Brian Cox (in the role of Menenius), Vanessa Redgrave (in the role of Volumnia, who is the mother of Coriolanus) and and the always beautiful Jessica Chastain (in the role of Virgilia, who is the wife of Coriolanus). They lift this story to a high level with their good performances and it is of course always nice to see many well-known personalities play in a film. The opening of the story was quite nice and even contains some action, but after that the story really only revolves around the dialogues and I personally found that a bit boring and long-winded (especially because the film lasts almost two hours). I thought the ending (where Caius Martius Coriolanus is killed) was quite nice, but it was predictable.

But all in all, this is quite a nice Drama / Thriller film to see and it is indeed something different.

A somewhat special film. A Shakespeare play with a modern twist. Not the first time this has happened, but it is always something special. This time in a war setting. The story was not always interesting and perhaps could have been a bit shorter. The cast did well and everything else looked great. Good for once.
