The shepherd is of good will, but the sheep have different opinions about the Church.

Some poignant, as in the strong opening scene, others with certain prejudices or without much opinion and in each case it is the imposing figure of the pastor, in classic black costume, and played by a beautiful Brendan Gleason, who speaks to them.

Film therefore has to rely mainly on the meaning of the many dialogues, but also excels in image compositions.

It's a brilliant moral dilemma, a premise that can be ruined by an ignorant director. John Michael McDonagh, however, manages to convincingly keep Calvary on track. Like his brother Martin – director of In Bruges (2008) and Seven Psychopaths (2012) – McDonagh does not go for the easy laugh, but focuses on the darkest tones of the humor spectrum and coats the film with a light existentialist sauce. . Faith, mortality and the inner struggle between good and evil are the main themes in Calvary. Gleeson as Lavelle is a layered character, a complex man who fights his own battle. In an Ireland that has been plunged into a collective crisis of faith over the past decade, he has lost the trust of his fellow villagers. He is like the shepherd who has lost his sheep, and the fact that he never sounds the alarm about his death sentence indicates that he accepts that sacrificial role.

The apparently honest priest James [Brendan Gleeson] is threatened with death during a confession and challenged to face off on the nearby beach a few days later. James tries to figure out who his threat may be, but soon comes to the conclusion that there are many people within the village community where he works who hold a grudge against him or the faith he represents. That forces him to take a good look in the mirror, even though there seems to be only one way to find out who his threat is.

Partly a whodunit with well-written characters, but also a character study that offers a solid bone for Brendan Gleeson. He bites into this role and although the story meanders every now and then, the strong cast makes it worth checking out.
