"It's showtime"

In 1973 – Spain is still suffering under the Franco dictatorship – Javier is a clown himself. When he falls in love with Natalia, the beautiful girlfriend of his colleague Sergio, he incurs his anger. A bloody battle between the two men is the result, in which bystanders are not spared either.

Mediocre film on which I just couldn't get a grip and couldn't get "into" the film. Probably because I barely felt the touch with the characters that could be stolen from me one by one. Absurd at times and a tight pace. I may have been overstimulated...

In addition, some beautiful images and shots. Editing and cinematography are also in order. However, I could not always taste the humor. Too busy and surreal at times, few moments of rest. Sometimes I can have this, but most of the time I don't. From absurd to crazy...

Mediocre film about two clowns (one funny and one sad) who fall for the same woman. A good mix of genres makes this quite a colorful intention. Visually, this is further emphasized by the entire decoration (which does look fine by the way). Unfortunately this doesn't work as well and the whole thing is quite unbalanced so I didn't really get into the story.

Peculiar.

Maybe just keep an eye on that De la Iglesia. The Last Circus is my first film by him and it immediately makes an impression. I had never heard of this director. The movie itself did, but it mostly just came to lie in front of me. In the end, it turned out to be an extremely entertaining, but also, above all, wacky film.

It is difficult to assign a real genre to this film, because they are just about all covered. The film rushes through all kinds of tones at a rapid pace and often involves a different genre. I especially get the idea that De la Iglesia just wanted to treat as much as possible. Where this should normally appear chaotic, this film knows how to use it advantageously.

It's a crazy event, remarkably violent too. What the film does have in common is that it always combines a light-hearted tone with a very gray and dark atmosphere. The film feels constantly dark, but the actual content is actually too wacky to let that sink in. There are a lot of characters in it, some of whom are crazy, and some are not.

The bad thing about the film is that it loses some power in the middle part after a very strong start. Before the fun finale starts, I couldn't help but wonder which clown was the better. All that love stuff didn't interest me at all, I came mainly for the completely ridiculous event and the crazy content. Because to be honest, these films are almost never made.

Because it has a content that you would probably never really find in other films, I highly recommend the film. Sometimes it may be clear that the film is a bit too enthusiastic and goes too far outside the budget, but otherwise a nice separate and special film that flattens the doors from beginning to end and goes fully for entertainment with a deeper edge.
