This film is pure rock n roll, swings through the roof and is hard, extraordinarily hard. I can understand that De Palma is mentioned above as a reference, after all, Tightrope is the movie that Patrick Bateman would [i] idolize (instead of Body Double), if American Psycho hadn't been written by a wimp like Easton Ellis. In its flirting with serial killer aesthetic, the film is surprisingly unambiguous. Making a parallel between frolicking female calves and the reflection of a blade should all be possible, it was thought at the time. Very naturalistic and uncomfortably visceral, I sometimes imagined myself in a Zola novel. I won't mention that at some point even Eastwood's very own daughter of 12 years(!) is sexualized, here we went on the Argento tour for a while. But less annoying. Clint himself looks rather dazed and doesn't seem to be able to cope with the absolute misery of the premise, as if he's a little ashamed. Even when he is allowed to announce to a feminist that he wants to "lick the sweat drops off her body", it is with a certain hesitation. That Richard Tuggle must have been one hell of a creep. This contributes to the mystique surrounding this vague work, that it was not directed by Eastwood himself but by an anonymous person who disappeared without a trace. Or no, maybe Tuggle didn't disappear without a trace at all and there is a much more banal reason that he stopped making films after that. Maybe he went to work for TV or became a plumber or something. No, I don't even want to know! I'll make up for myself an exciting fictional life story about Richard Tuggle, to be continued.

A solid thriller starring Clint Eastwood as Police Inspector Block on the hunt for a serial killer. The director and writer is Richard Tuggle, who also provided all the scripts for Escape From Alcatraz, in which Eastwood also starred.

The setting is New Orleans, the entertainment district. The film was actually shot in that city and the pulsating atmosphere of violence, crime and paid sex is always disturbingly present in the story. The score consists of lingering jazz and blues and lends the dingy atmosphere an extra layer.

The killer is after prostitutes. The hunt for the killer takes on a somewhat kinky and intimate touch when it turns out that Block himself regularly uses the services of prostitutes. He knows the victims.

This fact makes the film exciting and penetrating and provides an unsteady view of the character Block. An ambivalent character well played by Eastwood. Good-natured, conscientious and enthusiastic, but also clearly clothed with shadowy traits. The inner demons of the killer and his pursuer Block match. The film and its characters show countless dark edges.

The film gradually transcends the path of a normal decent police thriller. Under the direction of Tuggle, Eastwood plays several personalities in a very nuanced way. He is first and foremost an inspector. In addition, he is the loving father of two daughters, an expert on the sex industry and a hesitant, wary man who struggles with real love and real feelings. Eastwood radically breaks with his image of cool tough guy in this murky but pleasant melange of dark, moving and shocking impressions.

A-typical Eastwood piece, quite sleazy and dark in terms of plot and atmosphere. The latter is both literally and figuratively. The whole thing just doesn't want to get off the ground and it doesn't get really exciting anywhere. We have not often seen Clint perform so subdued and passive. A handful of good moments and funny dialogues, but the film is now so dated that it can hardly be taken seriously anymore. The natural scenes with Eastwood and his 14-year-old daughter Alison are among the best in the film.
