"Two sisters. Two lives. One Love..."
Hilary and Jackie du Pré grow up as close twins. But their shared passion for music drives a wedge between them. Initially Hilary is the musical star of the family, but Jackie soon turns out to be an exceptional cellist. As the sisters get older, they also grow further apart. As Jackie goes on one international tour after another, Hilary announces her marriage to Kiffer, a talented young conductor. Jackie becomes increasingly lonesome and desperate for love and warmth. Then she meets Daniel Barenboim, a famous pianist and conductor.

It had been here for a while (bought by my parents), so I took a look. I had seen him on TV once before, but I can hardly remember anything about it. Overall, I thought it was a nice drama film. I had never heard of Hilary and Jaqueline's stories. But I must say it was an interesting story. And so was the movie. Not bored for a moment. There were a few things less, as already mentioned before me, the somewhat 'busy' camera work. Fortunately, the acting performances also make up for a lot. I still knew Emily Watson from the beautiful Punch-Drunk Love. Here too she played a beautiful role. But Rachel Griffiths was also doing well. And of course the music.. The genre is not exactly my thing, but nevertheless I liked it very much. All in all, a successful, true-life drama film.

Beautiful film with two very convincing actresses in the lead role; Watson, of course, commands the most attention, first with her extroverted uninhibitedness and later with her play in the wheelchair (the latter won't be a spoiler considering how famous her character was, although I didn't know her myself and therefore didn't know anything about her). her MS), but Griffiths does not let himself be snowed under. Very moving ending. Bizarre detail from the IMDb trivia page: "The film has never been released in France to avoid any litigation from the real-life Daniel Barenboim."

Wow what a bad movie.
The tragic story of Jacqueline du Pré is well known - or at least the public part of it. What moved the makers of this film to turn it into an unpleasant and superfluous view of her sister, with which she gets a few ugly kicks posthumously. Yes, I've read Hilary's defense to that, but none of that convinces me that this message is one that serves a purpose or even comes close to the real Du Pré. And perhaps more important than my opinion, Daniel Barenboim's "Couldn't they have waited until I was dead?" speaks volumes.
I find Watson's rendition just as awful - it starts at an enormous distance because she does not remotely resemble Du Pré. But also in her manners, facial expressions and all, it just really isn't right - and there is still plenty of footage of Du Pré to be found. They should have asked Lori Singer, at least she still knew how to hold a cello. No doubt she had looked at that footage for her role in Fame.
Half a point above the minimum, but that's only for the music and for the roles of Frain and Dance. And the film goes straight into the bin. Bah.
