Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam plot
Taqwacore is a combination of hardcore, a certain movement in (punk) music, and taqwa, an Arabic word that can be translated as 'piety' or 'fear of God'. Writer, journalist and Muslim convert Michael Muhammad Knight was the first to use the term. His novel "The Taqwacores", about a group of young Muslim punk rockers, sparked a wave of recognition among young American Muslims and formed the basis for the emergence of several Muslim punk bands. The documentary "Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam" documents the journey of a group of Islam punks through the US and a visit to Pakistan, with Michael Knight as guide and inspiration. His story with quotes from his book forms the backbone of the film. Images of concerts or attempts to book concerts are interspersed with the personal stories of band members.
