Please Give plot

Kate and Alex form a New York couple who live in an apartment adjacent to another apartment they own, but which they rent out to an old woman. They would like to occupy that house themselves again, but as long as the old woman lives there, they cannot do anything with the apartment themselves. So we have to wait until she dies. In the meantime they meet the granddaughters of the old lady, who have their own thoughts about the not always sympathetic lady.

Just come and watch for a week.

A glimpse into Kate and Alex's lives, watching them drift through life. A bit of drama interspersed with happiness, all told through the events surrounding the couple. With some quite comical situations that are well-developed.

Still, it's one of those films that might make you wonder, "What was that about again?" But if you can get over that, or enjoy a well-acted film—Catherine Keener at her best, for example—then this is a decent read.

Sharp characterizations in a (tragi)comic drama about married couple Kate [Catherine Keener] and Alex [Oliver Platt], who make a living buying furniture from recently deceased elderly people and restoring and selling it—at a hefty profit margin. Their apartment adjoins that of ailing 91-year-old Andra [Ann Morgan Guilbert], with whom they have agreed to take over the apartment after her death so they can expand their own home. Kate struggles with increasing guilt, a feeling she tries to assuage, in part, by giving money to homeless people in the neighborhood (which explains the title). A feeling that intensifies when she and Alex meet Andra's granddaughters Rebecca [Rebecca Hall] and Mary [Amanda Peet].

Screenwriter/director Nicole Holofcener delivers a film that, while thinly plotted, is rich in authentic dialogue and relatable moments, a sharply observed comedic drama where much is said without words. With such a strong screenplay, you can't go wrong as an actor, and the actors are excellent. Rebecca Hall stood out for me most as the kind but shy granddaughter.

With Please Give, director and writer Nicole Holofcener creates a film about neurotics. A film about people who actually have everything and should be able to lead a comfortable life. They don't. Only when there's little or nothing to worry about do the neuroses flare up and suddenly problems arise. Not real problems. Not unsolvable problems. They're problems a neurotic sees as problems. Issues with sex or the burdens of middle age, for example. Excessively struggling with guilt towards those less fortunate, for example. Or excessively dealing with death and illness that pop up in passing, as well as love and the emotional life of a fifteen-year-old teenager. These are issues that affect everyone, but are especially hard on those who lead a relatively carefree existence. Luxury problems for the carefree, you might say.

Please Give is a film full of neurotic whiners. Yet, it's an enjoyable film, even if the characters are a bit tiresome and not necessarily sympathetic. All those tiresome, neurotic characters do have witty dialogue and one-liners. A pleasant cast also has a soothing effect: Catherine Keeler, Oliver Platt, Rebecca Hall, Amanda Peet. A nice sidekick is Ann Morgan Guilbert, who plays a headstrong old lady and doesn't mince her words, airing her bittersweet perspective on life in a matter-of-fact and straightforward way amidst the neurotic goings-on. These are enjoyable breaks.

And so the film glides by comfortably. And just when you think, "Enough! Now I know," the film ends. I don't think I'll be able to recap Please Give in a while, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. Sometimes a film doesn't need to do more than that.
