Fist Fight plot

"After school. Parking lot. It's on."

Andy Campbell (Charlie Day) is a laid-back English teacher who tries to be everyone's friend. However, history teacher Ron Strickland (Ice Cube) is of an entirely different caliber. Result orientation is highly valued and his motto is: "I don't have to be liked, I have to teach." When Andy accidentally gets Ron fired on the last hectic day of school, he challenges him to a brawl in the parking lot.

Okay, the story is weak and predictable, but I still didn't think it was bad. Apart from Ice Cube, I thought it was quite a nice cast and there were some nice jokes here and there, I especially thought the beginning was funny. Nice and coarse and flat, I like that. Unfortunately, that tone is not maintained throughout the film, but I laughed quite a bit. You have to like this, but I think it's worth a small pass.

“Teachers can't fight!”

Mediocre. I had to laugh at times at the situations Charlie Day gets into, and actors like Jillian Bell and Kumail Nanjiani have some fun moments. The scene involving Day, his daughter and a school musical is a highlight. But the rest is very mediocre, and Ice Cube in particular is really bad. With these types of comedies you have to have a certain degree of 'suspension of disbelief', but even then the ending is still very strange and illogical. Ice Cube's turnaround in particular makes no sense.

As expected.

Fist Fight never really tries to be high-quality entertainment. When the movie came out I had never heard of a Charlie Day. I now know him a little better, but I have always found him more successful in the smaller roles. When it comes to leading roles, he often repeats his tricks.

This means that it mainly involves a lot of talking. I think Day is improvising at least half of his lines because it feels like desperate croaking to draw an awkward smile from the viewer. Not often do you meet someone who just can't make you laugh. Ice Cube, on the other hand, is quite funny, always nice to see him in less serious roles.

Story-wise, it's a thin concept stretched to a whopping 91 minutes. In principle, it doesn't involve much more than a teacher eager to bash another teacher and the other teacher trying to get out of it. Since the tone is smooth, it is no problem to get through the film, but you will not find any really successful jokes.

I found the finale in particular funny and the film regularly goes big with the stunts. These are the short, lively elements that make Fist Fight still a watchable film. However, with the large number of unsuccessful jokes, it is also a film that will make you roll your eyes. Fairly childish puppet show that will probably be overlooked by a large part of the audience.
