I actually didn't expect much from this film, given the story that doesn't exactly appeal to me. At least it has everything it takes to be a dead boring movie. The fact that it did not work out in the end is mainly due to the beautiful images of nature that Sokurov presented us with, such as the forests and undulating landscapes with the sound and smoke of the steam train several times. What peace that radiated.
All in all, a beautiful film, this film by Sokurov, whose length of 73 minutes is more than sufficient.

Literally a very picturesque film where every image really seems like a poetic painting. Very idyllic and very beautiful. The use of color and images of nature are very prominent. Very stylistic film also with a fixed camera. Many images often linger for a very long time, which severely limits the pace. It gives you the opportunity to look for details and little things.
The plot is limited to the son's care of the sick mother. Moving and beautifully presented. Suffering and love go hand in hand here. The sometimes cloudy images perhaps symbolized the world between life and death.
A film that I found particularly technically advanced. In terms of plot, despite the melancholic theme and partly due to the many slow images, I never felt the film was 100% enjoyable. Still enough appreciation to give this score.

Very moody. Stripped of hyped sentiment, but very tender and small. With only about an hour of playing time, that works. The film just takes its time in that hour, with only a few scenes. Because each shot takes its time, you get the chance to absorb the picturesque staging. That is equally original. I just don't know if I think it's a really visually beautiful film. The choice to play with the lens and try everything sometimes gives strange proportions and a blurry look. That's supposed to make it dreamy, but it's the moody reality of impending death and the grieving afterwards that makes this film worthwhile for me.
