The basic story is fascinating. Under pressure from rebellious barons, King John [Paul Giamatti] signed the Magna Carta in 1215, giving up much of his power. But the king does not just let himself be dictated by the law and gathers a group of murderers around him to liquidate all responsible lords and claim their possessions. The Magna Carta is the cradle of European democracy, but Jonathan English has no interest in its historical aspects. And so Ironclad soon gets bogged down in a heap of sneezes from powerful men, much bloodshed under endless male roars and desperate attempts to disguise the limited budget. A great cast, but a useless film.

Terribly bad movie. Amateur mob. Bad camera work. Bad music. Very bad fight scenes.

Cheap digital blood spatter. I read back that this is a gross movie? Well, then you're really not used to anything yet, because it was 'soft' to me anyway. This film does not deserve a high score at all.

But I took a moment to check it off here and despite the bad reviews, it was not too bad for me. Well, the film doesn't offer much in terms of content, but I don't think that's what people had in mind.

The story about King John's Magna Carta in this case is just an excuse for a lot of weapons clatter. A baron who is on the kill list gathers a number of men to hold his ground with him in a castle. Why this castle because judging by Derek Jacobi's reaction, this is not Cox's castle, but that aside. As said, a lot of gun violence and bloodshed, a group of freebooters who have to get along with each other and a huge horde of attackers.

At the very least, the soundtrack is beautiful. In addition, Paul Giamata is quite good as a king gone mad and Purefoy also fills in his role as a taciturn Templar perfectly. When I see James Purefoy I always wonder what kind of James Bond he would have played. I read that he was the last dropout after Brosnan and Craig. Still, I would have loved to have seen him in Brosnan's place, he certainly has the looks and charisma, much more than that slick Brosnan. But again that aside. Lots of action, bloodshed, and occasionally quite explicit with loose parts and all. In addition, the many small tactics from that time stand out with towers, catapults, weapons, oil and undermining.

Little is known about content and story. The much too articulate and modern thinking Kate Mara is fun but unrealistic and the camera work during fights is making you seasick. Nevertheless, Ironclad is quite nice to watch once. It certainly isn't enough.
