Actor James Dean's childhood was marked by the loss of his mother, the one who instilled in him a love of art and culture. Despite the enduring pain of this great loss, Dean made the impression of a normal, friendly, somewhat provincial boy to the people he met in his childhood and early adolescence. It wasn't until he moved to New York in the early 1950s that his true, complex character became apparent: that of a gifted artist, a loyal friend, a heartthrob and a car-obsessed speed demon. The documentary traces James Dean's life back in time in search of his personality. Clips from his films and interviews with friends and colleagues paint a new detailed portrait of this man who may not have been a rebel, but a unique and fascinating personality.
