The story is quite thin and, in retrospect, quite predictable, but Le Boucher is still definitely worth it.

Claude Chabrol makes this a kind of Hitchcock, although it never reaches that level of tension, although the suggestive tension is certainly there. What is very good is the wonderfully special and mysterious atmosphere that exists throughout the entire duration. In addition, the acting is very good and it is always interesting.

A special video and for me the first introduction to Chabrol's work. The student may not have surpassed or equaled the master, but that does not alter the fact that this is a nice film, although the simple story is its biggest weakness.

3.5*

What war and love cannot bring about. And probably even more. I don't really understand how you can call this a mystery, if at the same time you conclude that it has little mystery to offer. Especially when that seems to happen more often in Chabrol's oeuvre. Strange reasoning. The criticism of the story is a bit easier to follow, although I don't share it that way. It didn't really seem like a film that would benefit from all kinds of box office jumping. After all, it's not a crime scene or anything like that.

Chabrol draws a psychological thriller from his characters and he does it well. Quite atmospheric in the rustic village, the soundtrack is one that gets under the skin and when the past of both comes along and Popaul's eyes go from eager to something else, something bubbles up. No clammy hands, but it is there when it gets to the boiling point, also a few nice shadow areas there and with the dim ending Chabrol has got his contrast. Although that monologue seems a bit excessive.

Beautifully filmed in the picturesque Périgord, well-cast main characters and an interesting soundtrack that reminded me a bit of On The Corner by Miles Davis.

It's a pity that the story just rambles on in such a dead way, I couldn't do much with it.
