The plot of this film can be told in 2 or 3 sentences, but that does not alter the fact that Hobson's Choice is a wonderful film with a beautiful story.

It is wonderful to see how Willie Mossop (literally) climbs the social ladder and transforms from a timid workman into a self-confident guy, who is then shocked by his own courage.

The family troubles in the Hobson house, where father Henry Horatio Hobson apparently can no longer handle his daughters, are also funny to watch. Charles Laughton is perfect for the role of a dismayed father who has to discover that his eldest daughter in particular has outgrown his head.

And then the silliness with which the film deals with, for example, the wedding night! Just hilarious. Now that's British humor that I enjoy.

Excellent film about a shoe salesman who is stuck with three unmarried daughters. A fun and entertaining story in which enough happens and it is secretly well put together. Beautiful characters. Well cast and two wonderful roles by Charles Laughton and John Mills. And as kappeuter already noted, this film has more of the tone of a Frank Capra film than a David Lean film (especially compared to his later epics).

The third film adaptation of the play of the same name, which was released in 1915. Director David Lean makes a film that makes no secret of the fact that a play forms the basis for the film. Except for a long street with various shops, the locations are all indoors. The characters are in a shoe store, a café, a home. Small spaces that have a rather static effect and also have that effect on the characters.

In David Lean's films, it is the women who have doubts and look critically at their living situation and want to change it. That is also the case in this film. Henry Hobson is the wealthy owner of a shoe store. He has three daughters and speaks of women as difficult but necessary pets. And that's how he treats his daughters too. The eldest daughter is tired of living under her father's tyranny and breaks out. Very much against Father Hobson's wishes. The situation with the eldest daughter then gives rise to some complications that are played out rather theatrically and with few clever dialogues in the remainder of the film.

Hobson is played by Charles Laughton. When he is not enjoying himself alcoholically, he loudly tries to defend his position of power. He acts well, but his character didn't do much for me. None of the characters did much for me. As mentioned, the dialogues are not very sharp, surprising or funny and the complications in the story do not lead to much excitement. I thought it was all rather corny. The film didn't grab me with that old-fashioned corniness. For me, Hobson's Choice is not a film that leaves a memorable impression.
