Mediocre film about a group of friends who bring home a woman who has been robbed. A thin plot and a somewhat boring first half. The second part is a lot more entertaining with quite a bit of bloodshed and brutal violence. However, there is no real menacing atmosphere here and the often hysterical acting of the victims is far from good.

Blood, sweat and chainsaws

Macabre is an Indonesian horror with a lot of potential, which unfortunately does not always succeed. The gore scores particularly high here and viewers who like their horror extra bloody have come to the right place. The bloody violence is also very recognizable from the Netflix Original The Night Comes for Us, which was also directed by one of the two Mo Brothers. I also thought it was very cool that this was not just about a murderous family and that their origin had a supernatural touch. I thought the head of the family, Dara, was particularly well portrayed.

Despite the strong design, I thought that the course was often just too predictable, including the many scary moments and the addition of a police team, who only served as cattle for slaughter. How many times have we seen this? But in 2009, at the time of its release, it might not have been as much of a cliché as it is now.

Although I never thought Macabre was really exciting, the potential of the Mo Brothers is clearly visible. There were also a number of strong, stand-alone scenes that were well put together and occasionally showed the necessary subtle depth/small details. Such as the moment when Dara speaks a few sentences in Dutch, making it clear that she was also alive at the time of the colonization of Indonesia. But also the word MEAT that appears on one of the license plates of the cars. Well, I would never have noticed that last one if my girlfriend hadn't been Indonesian and hadn't pointed it out to me

3.0*

This is a nice slasher from Indonesian soil. Indonesian films are not averse to some overkill and a lot of violence. If you pour a creepy horror sauce on it, you get something like this. It was not entirely clear to me how the crazy family's plan was to lure innocent victims to the house. Was this always the same method as a lost woman?

Anyway, from the moment you enter the house you immediately feel from the cold atmosphere that something is not right. I also follow Woland in that at a certain point I lost track of who was bashing in who's head with all those people. Especially when the police also made their appearance.

The mother makes a big impression with her creepy, distant appearance. But that whole family was cold-bloodedly stoic. Lots of blood splashing around, that's for sure, but the overall atmosphere was also great, which makes this film slightly above mediocre. When the bloodshed starts, things really go to shit. Nice!
