"She was the wife of a king… and the lover of a soldier."

A SUBLIME film, you have to like historical dramas, but then you'll love this production! It was all so well put together; the acting of the actors, the entourage, the entire environment where it took place, the backgrounds and the story.

We had a great evening with this and expect to review the film again in the future and who knows... maybe even 5 stars?

Great historical drama with a strong role interpretation, based on the book by Alexandre Dumas (The 3 Musketeers). It was not so much Auteuil that made the most impression, but Jean Hugues Anglade as the weak-willed King Charles IX and of course Adjani. The film is set during the religious wars between Catholics and Protestants, in which the two camps are trying to kill each other. The film opens with the wedding of the Catholic princess Margot to the Protestant Henri de Navarre (the future monarch Henri IV). A political wedding intended to trap the Protestants (the night of Saint Barthélemy). Not only the numerous intrigues with a declining royal family are discussed, but also Margot's hidden love for a young nobleman, and the alliance between Margot and Navarre to help each other, which saves Navarre's life several times, and thus gradually the Margot's mother's nightmare, Catherine de' Medici, comes true: that France will be ruled by a Protestant. . Fascinating and really well presented!

I was vaguely familiar with Bartholomew's Night and a little background is not an unnecessary luxury with this film. It is a historical film with quite a few (high-ranking) extras with diverse interests and double meanings. Intriguing to follow how acquired power was wished to maintain or at best expand. And anyone who got in the way of this had to make way. And in the Middle Ages this meant as much as death. People didn't turn their backs on that.

Then the very flamboyant Queen Margaretha is interesting. She moves through the royal corridors like a horny femme fatale. Her new husband immediately pales in comparison, but realizes that the (marriage) pact he made with her is his life insurance, as long as he can convince her of it. Because she doesn't think very highly of him, on the contrary.

Technically all done well. Beautiful sets and costumes, well acted, beautifully depicted. Historically it will probably hang together, I assume, but OK.
