Awesome movie! These are one of those (80's) movies that unfortunately I don't see enough of anymore. Must also be because I have already filtered / seen most of it. But this was pure enjoyment. A nice cast and a lovely atmosphere there in Beverly Hills. Add a few tasty Budjes and enjoy a light-hearted film in which there is much to laugh about. Yes, that was a nice Sunday afternoon.

The world in miniature and very current. The bum puts everyone on trial and not without compassion, but then the family smiles sweetly at him when he fishes a rancid can of salmon from the garbage after leaving... anyway the luxury then, if you may choose.

Mazursky is kind of my hero, even if he didn't come up with this story himself (after all, based on a play by René Fauchois). But also his role in eg 'Two Days in the Valley' is great (here he also has a small part). Actually, I just have to dig up everything from the best man.

4.5*.

PS story would also be ideal for a TV series update.

Absurdly low rating for such an extremely witty movie, where everyone is funny, even the dog.

Jerry Baskin (Nick Nolte) is a drifter who loses his dog one day. In search of his faithful four-legged friend, he ends up in a swanky shopping center where he is immediately bonjourned outside by two security guards: "Why don't you go downtown and take a bath!" Grieving the loss of his dog, he ends up committing suicide in the swimming pool of a wealthy family.

The wealthy Whiteman family blossoms with the arrival of the bum; Exhausted Barbara (Bette Midler) feels like having sex again, the son of the house finally dares to come out. The film is also a kind of feel-good movie. But one with a sharp edge.

For example, when Dave (Richard Dreyfuss) sits down with that club of bums and a bum says to him: "You want a drink white man?" ..."How'd he know my name?" Haha.. Then they start singing aloud in unison:

"We are the bums, we are the homeless..." lol

America is equally well put in its place; the looking down on poor people, the obsession with race.

But the absolute star of the film is the dog, Matisse. So funny done with those surprised looks and the story around it.

Film opens and closes with Once in a Lifetime by the Talking Heads.
