“I'm buried in a box. I'm buried in a box!'
Exciting film. A film set in one location, with one actor, can quickly become repetitive. But for the most part, Buried remains a thrilling and chilling film about a man who is kidnapped and put in a coffin underground. A telephone, a lighter, a drink and other useful attributes is all he has.
The what, why and how soon becomes clear, and director Cortés clearly wants to keep the focus on Paul Conroy and his terror. The telephone conversations provide the necessary tension and it is clearly a race against time. Ryan Reynolds is very strong and knows how to effortlessly hold the viewer's attention. No mean feat if you're the only actor, and the fear and desperation just explode. The ending really completes this movie. No false sentiment or unrealistic stuff, just a fitting and realistic ending to a claustrophobic film.

A movie with a nightmare setting. This is, of course, a situation that no one would voluntarily want to find themselves in. For this alone the film is actually worth a viewing, but the execution must also be sufficient. Fortunately, Cortés does that too.
Reynolds is very solid in his role. It's not the easiest role, but he knows how to give enough panic and charm with his role. You'd just sit in his box as an actor to shoot a movie. Cortés knows how to do enough with it.
The playing time is very stretched, it should not have lasted 95 minutes, and the tension does not always remain strong, but in general the film is bursting with atmosphere. Nicely intensely portrayed with and visually it looks nice.
Especially in the beginning you as a viewer are immediately thrown into the film. The film ignores flashbacks and omits the introduction. We rarely see this, and that's why this is more fun for that reason. This is just a thrill ride from start to finish, the way I like to see it.
Atmospheric use of camera in the box, and sometimes beautiful images. Sometimes quite exciting, but never a nail biter though. But luckily, Cortés just delivers a stylish film that doesn't bore. It's one of the better thrillers for me.

After about a minute of darkness, we see a close up of the face of gagged Paul Conroy [Ryan Reynolds], an American truck driver employed by Crestin, Roland & Thomas who is Iraq to help rebuild. He is locked in a coffin underground and no one responds to his call for help. How and why did he get into this situation? And more importantly, how does he get out of here? Reynolds proves to be an excellent dramatic actor in this exciting, superbly written nail-biter full of intelligent plot twists. A triumph for Reynolds, Crotes and screenwriter Chris Sparling, who get the most out of this basic fact, even though 95 minutes turns out to be just a bit too long.
