Very successful comedy from all-rounder Ang Lee, one of my favorite directors. The film in exuberant colors is filled with a lot of humour, but here and there has a dramatic undertone in which the mood swings flow seamlessly into each other. The hand of the master Lee. This can also be found in the almost flawless performances of the five protagonists. A film to watch again after a while.

Poor.

I didn't really like it to be honest. The combination of the increasingly complicated plot (lie above lie story that can usually be found in comedies) and the drama does not work for a meter. I'm really surprised that people found it credible.

The acting is also very bad, the only two characters who live a bit are the father and mother. The main trio is lousy. Visually this film is also really a graveyard, anyway the complete styling is substandard.

For many, the theme probably remains, I can imagine something about that, but otherwise this is just another outing film, only this time with an Asian twist. The migration problems and young / old ailments further stand in the way of this.

It is that the father figure also appealed to me and that Lee never really lets it sink in, but thought this was a poorly put together work that dies in its combination of genres and themes.

1.5*

Countless films have been made of this, usually in the lighter genre, in which the (in-law) parents come on premarital prospecting, but do not actually know that it concerns a gay couple. It doesn't really stand out, but it isn't really bad either. It is, as Starbright Boy says, “a director who deals in sixes or sevens”, also with me, Brokeback mountain being the big exception, but that also had to do with the Gyllenhaal-Letger-Williams trio.

In the end everything will be fine and there will never be any major tensions. Rather, some fear and unease. A film that results in the traditional “everything will be fine story”, which is not surprising with this genre of film. Groundbreaking for Ang Lee, daring and with guts. That alone deserves praise. Effortlessly incorporates the cultural and modern contradictions or changes in his film. Good, but not overwhelming.
