It's funny to see how opinions about this movie vary.
From people who really don't like the film and don't understand it, to people who give it the status 'cult classic'.

I belong to the latter group.
Broadly speaking, the story has perhaps already been used several times in the horror genre (group is stuck in the house surrounded by hostile creatures), but that does not alter the fact that it is wonderfully developed.

The choice to use animatronics and practical effects instead of CGI contributes very well to the atmosphere that this film aims to convey.
And it makes the moments when the werewolves come into the picture all the more horrifying.

It may also be said that they give each character in the film a moment so that you get a connection with each character.
This is mainly done during the first part of the film. (the scene at the campfire where they tell each other stories of events from their lives).

The film is also full of great memorable scenes (the scene with the sergeant and his entrails, the dog who finally sees the chance to play with this and the scene in bed where they are glueing things shut[/spoiler ]), one liners, gore and hilarious dark humor.

4 stars.

setback.

Knowing that Marshall made his better films early in his career, I had a lot of faith in Dog Soldiers, but it turned out to be a somewhat disappointing film. I therefore think that Marshall mainly had his magnum opus with The Descent and never reached that level again.

Nevertheless, the film has a decent first half. Obviously not too much budget yet, but Marshall knows how to work nicely. He immediately chooses a good location. The forest offers a gloomy atmosphere with a lot of charm, and the camera work is also quite nice during the chases and action scenes. However, when the film moves its setting to the house, things start to slow down.

The restless and intense camera work combined with a dark setting has a less effective effect, especially because you don't wonder what you see, but rather ask yourself what you can still see at all. The horror is simply presented in a cluttered way, but if this is done so that you don't know the threat is precise, then it fails.

You know exactly what it is about, and the werewolves are portrayed ineffectively and a little too clearly. The camera work and editing are fast, but they are not effective. The course is also quite boring during the second half and apart from some nice sound there is little to experience. It's a shame, because the first half is pretty good.

There's nothing wrong with the acting, except that I could barely tell the characters apart. The nocturnal outdoor scenes are sometimes nicely portrayed, the dark indoor scenes depressing. There's little in Dog Soldiers to find really exciting. Marshall is passionate about his work, but forgets to make a really effective film and that's a shame.
