Thanks to the good acting of the top cast and the original concept, this turned out to be a decent film after all. The atmosphere and soundtrack are also good. It is, however, confronting to see Robin, his men, and his enemies at work in old age. They are portrayed as being so old that they can barely handle their swords anymore. Bow and arrow are just about manageable. Because of this, the fights are not spectacular, but rather touching. The beginning with King Richard is also new to me. Normally, the man is portrayed as the most just king England has ever had, and that is likely the case for his own people as well, but here he is also depicted as a murderer of children and women by his enemies from the Middle East. The ending is beautiful. I had read it in a book once before and it gave me a lump in my throat back then. Even now, when the last arrow flew from his bow, I had to swallow hard.

I'm torn between a 3 and a 3.5, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. So, a solid 3.5 stars.

I have very good memories of this, but the rewatch is disappointing: the romance between the two aging title characters remains moving (partly thanks to the beautiful performances of the leads), and Connery and Williamson do have chemistry, but Lester's usual ironic / comic / satirical / sobering approach leaves the film too much torn between two ideas. A nice bonus is that the supporting cast includes a huge list of famous names (although Ian Holm unfortunately appears in only a single scene), and at 47, Audrey Hepburn has lost none of her otherworldly beauty, so I might well think more positively about this film tomorrow or the day after, but while watching it, I was constantly left wanting more.

The death of Robin Hood.

Apparently, the original idea was to give the film that title, but Columbia reconsidered on second thought due to marketing. It's a shame, really, because it was honest, and original too, just like the idea to use this rather forgotten piece of the legend. I read it by chance once, although I can't recall exactly where right now—and how I came across it as well. It could easily have been fifty years ago; that is what happens then.

Aside from the spoiler, the story is fun and entertaining, and that is perhaps largely due to the nearly perfect cast. Sean Connery is a fine Robin Hood, although his ordinary Scottish self comes out a bit too much towards the end. Even better is Audrey Hepburn, with the sadness of the years in her eyes and curls that have been covered with scarves for a little too long. And Robert Shaw and Richard Harris as the bad guys. And even Denholm Elliott is in it, almost unrecognizable until you hear his voice—and see his eyes. It was actually because of him that I remembered I still had this film lying around. The day before yesterday, I saw A Murder of Quality, in which he plays the lead role.

Otherwise, it is all solid and beautifully filmed; where that feels somewhat unreal, that is perhaps because the film was shot in Spain. But that does not detract from what it is all about – Robin and Marian, Connery and Hepburn.
