The couple Steve and Kate Jones have everything their heart desires. They are rich, have a big house, both good jobs and two beautiful children who are very popular in school. In addition, they also have the nicest stuff in the neighborhood. The problem is that they are not family at all, but employees of a marketing company. And they know exactly how to sell their stuff…until things don't go smoothly with the 'family'.

The Joneses
The film lacks sharpness. The criticism of the consumer society could have provided an interesting satire, but the film lacks a strong script. The criticism remains superficial and the director seems to want to make a smooth comedy with some dramatic subplots intertwined.
In the last half hour The Joneses degenerate into a standard romcom with of course a kind of happy ending. Fortunately, the four actors are strong and it is certainly not an annoying film to watch once. Just for Amber Heard…

More or less as a result of Twin Peaks Season 3, I felt I should sit out this movie. On the edge of the seat it was not, rather half saggy, let this slippery stretched advertising world slide over me, where only a short thought took hold in me: "It's good that death opens the eyes. Of in any case at least one person."

I'm watching it for the second time now, and I notice that it's such a smart script where things casually pass in review but in the meantime the hard reality is exposed of the superficiality and materialism of living in suburbia pre social media . Neighbors and "friends" are there to sell all kinds of stuff in a sophisticated marketing scheme that is reminiscent of a mix of multilevel marketing and Scientology (reaching 'icon status'). Basically a pretty important movie. The beautiful Amber Heard (ex Johnny Depp) in perhaps her best role yet. Duchovny the only normal in the whole story. "But Larry you're doing so well, you've got all this stuff". It could well be that people don't speak highly of the film because it holds up a mirror to them. In fact, product placement and marketing to circles of friends are now being tackled even more sophisticatedly via cookies, social media and vloggers. Good roles also from Demi Moore and Lauren Hutton.
