Mari Carmen España: Tystnadens Slut plot
For thirty years there was a tacit agreement in Spain not to speak about the victims of the Franco regime and the perpetrators were not prosecuted. It was the prize for a nonviolent transition from dictatorship to democracy after Franco's death in 1975. Now Spain is being overtaken by the past it denied. The new generation asks questions and refuses to remain silent any longer. Swedish filmmakers Martin Jönsson and Pontus Hjorthén travel to Spain in an attempt to better understand the country's traumatic past. Here they ask questions about a past that has been silently swept under the rug. In southern Spain they meet Mari Carmen España. She has taken matters into her own hands and refuses to silence the past. She recently learned how her grandfather died in 1936. She does not accept that her grandfather's bones remain in a forgotten mass grave and demands a dignified grave.
