setback.

Pangs opt for a horror set-up, but the film leans much more towards drama. And that story doesn't amount to much. The Pangs prove to be more skilled at creating creepy scenes, and they don't do that enough here. There are certainly nice scenes in it, but there is not much tension or threat.

2.5* then, because there are of course much worse.

Fine Chinese drama-bit of horror. I had seen the remake a long time ago, still on DVD here, but apparently this is the original. And I often think the original Asian films are better (have a little more respect for this one too) than their American remakes (see Ju-on-grudge, ringu-the ring, the one missed call films...). And this one was not too bad, is more drama with some horror elements, but again presented in a nice and yet exciting way. Can't say if it's that much better than the Jessica Alba remake (which I also like to see in action). I'll have to rewatch this one then. I really liked this one and of course you can do both.

Purchased in a box together with Oldboy and Sword in the moon, and after seeing those two finally the turn of The Eye, a film that did not attract me too much because of the genre that is not my thing, besides the reviews are not awesome.

It is not all that complicated, after an eye operation the young violinist sees things that are not there, and it seems as if she has taken over certain gifts from the previous owner. Thus begins a search for the former owner and an attempt to end the visions. Characteristic is the typical Asian bustle in language and gesture and in the first instance the atmosphere of the film, which tends not to horror but to that of a mystery. And the film does that well, because the atmosphere and the subtle pseudo creepy moments are not that crazy after all.

During the events, it seems that line and logic slowly emerge and until then it is still not bad, but once back to 'the roots' the film slowly derails with the 'hanging moment' and later the catastrophe on the bridge where the showing the two ladies at the same time will be more symbolic than that there is more behind it. The music has also shown itself from a cringe-inducing side with the result that The Eye slowly sinks through the ice. Angelica Lee makes up for a lot in terms of appearance and is fun to watch.

The Eye doesn't start badly with its strong atmosphere, but the film doesn't keep this up, nor do I think the denouement is strong. The Eye is therefore no more than a nice snack.
