Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai plot
When you plant trees, you don't immediately think of winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Yet that is exactly what happened to Wangari Maathai, who was born in rural Kenya in 2004. Maathai, who studies in the United States in the 1960s, cares about the fate of the women she grew up with. They complain about the scarcity of water, their malnourished children and the increasing distances they have to walk for firewood. Maathai therefore founded the Green Belt Movement, an organization that encourages women in rural areas to plant trees. In doing so, they bring deforestation to a halt and provide new food and income sources for local communities. The organization also creates a new self-confidence among women in their fight against poverty and political oppression.
