There once was a (moderate) youth series: Eerie, Indiana.

This film is somewhat reminiscent of that.

Bizarrely filmed, but it sometimes comes across a bit too much like a film for Villa Achterwerk.

Towards the end it all becomes a bit stranger and more gruesome and certainly not suitable for children.

Some very good scenes but the film didn't really captivate me.

Crazy movie. I once came across it when, after seeing Gozu, I searched Google for "freaky Japanese movies", and it must be said: it is certainly strange.

As far as I'm concerned, the star of the film is Osugi. I never expected him to show up in this, but after seeing him in Ekusute before, he turns out to have such a freaky role here too. Fantastic, and a shame he doesn't get more screen time. The other roles were less successful, the acting wasn't always anything to write home about, especially Fhi Fan doesn't do much of anything.

Despite that, the film is quite interesting. It is well framed and contains many interesting ideas. It sometimes looks a bit amateurish, I always have the feeling that people have nice ideas to build a scene, but fail to finish it in such a way that it has maximum effect. In addition, the somewhat cheap effects prevent the film from being overwhelming. 3*.

Strange film, and although it also has a horror label (with some reason), it does not fall very neatly into the well-trodden path of that genre. And not really from any other genre, for that matter. Uzumaki is apparently a film adaptation of a manga story, and follows a Japanese village where spirals recur in all kinds of increasingly sinister places. Yes, indeed, spirals. It takes some getting used to the film style, it is probably the manga inspiration, but a lot of filming is done from strange angles, with cartoonish characters, and with strange close-ups and transitions. But visually it is really a picture (despite the fact that it does look a bit cheap at times), especially when we get a little further into the film. The story is in any case alienating and has a high WTF content, but it also manages to fascinate (for me) in a certain way. Especially because of the unique atmosphere. Don't go to this film if you're looking for tension and action, or gore, but for an hour and a half of vague shit with a cartoonish yet creepy atmosphere, this is a nice one.
