De Hel van '63 plot
January 1963. Despite the bad weather, the board of the Frisian Eleven Cities Committee decides, under pressure from the media, with the smallest possible majority of votes, that the Elfstedentocht will continue. Among the thousands who conquer a starting ticket are soldier Henk Buma (Cas Janssen), farmer's son Sjoerd Lelkama (Lourens van den Akker), worker Kees Ferwerda (Chris Zegers) and nurse Annemiek (Chava voor in 't Holt). All four have their reason to ride this tour of tours. Due to the dramatic and heroic events, this Elfstedentocht will go down in history as one of the most legendary, also for Henk, Sjoerd, Kees and Annemiek.

Clumsy, but quite watchable. Not always well acted - especially Janzen and Zegers have to stick to their other work - but somehow that doesn't bother us. What's even worse is that all the main characters have their reason to skate off the trip (and how will the film end?). And the hardships didn't really become very clear. But still, sometimes you have a film where that matters less and you take it for granted. Overall, I didn't think it was a boring movie to watch. Nice also some images of Friesland from then. The old Frisians as district heads together stole the show, with playful ease. 2.5*.

Typical case of producers who want to score quickly with a historical subject, putting in as many actors and actresses as possible in order to have familiar faces that attract an audience, thereby completely disregarding a good story and also acting performances.
And that's such a shame, because that tour from 1963 deserves a much better treatment, anyway a film about the tour of tours deserves a much better treatment.
Just a simple approach where the focus would have been on the game, because that's what we know about that trip, but now there were so many storylines that all the misery that came with it really annoyed me because some things were so unbelievable if i don't know what. And then those Game of Thrones effects with the wolves, please.
But what bothered me the most was the acting of Janzen, Zeegers and especially Zeelenberg. cringing.
The film still scores 1.5 for me because of the performances by skating legends Gemser and Angenent and guest roles by some radio personalities. Other than that, I'm not going to see this movie again. A missed opportunity, especially if you look at this in the light of other historical films that have been made in our country in recent years, such as De Ruyter or Kenau.
