Weak: after popi-sherrif (I need some action!) "hurricane" had solved the hillbilly family quarrel in his own way (sorry for the window), while the "city boys" were standing by with guns drawn, I just gave up. Again all over the top caricatures and clichés in a film that is meant to be deadly serious.

Once again I had to conclude that unfamiliarity of a film usually has a good reason...

Excellent film in which three drug dealers flee to a small town. A simple story, but with well-developed characters (on both sides of the law). The rural community is portrayed atmospherically and the contrast with the police from the big city also produces a few good scenes. Of the cast, Bill Paxton stands out in a positive sense. A small 4.0 stars.

Based on the crime classic Thieves Like Us, this has already been filmed once by Nicholas Ray with They Live By Night. This film adaptation is quite an update as it takes place in the 90s and a very socially critical layer has been added to it. In this case, the flight of a gangster gang is more like a coat rack on which a whole thing is hung about tension between white and black. In any case, the gangster gang is diverse and that also applies to the police force. In the 1940s (from which the novella and first film adaptation stem) things were quite different because of segregation. In this update, as icing on the cake, there is also a lot to do about the relationship between white boy Bill Paxton and black girl Cynda Williams. The line between thug-cop and evil-good doesn't seem to be as sharp as one might first think. Several dialogues deal about their relationshipand certainly also about the general position of black vs. White. Somewhat hair-pulling is the moment when Williams complains that she won't get a fair trial because of her skin color just after she shot a cop in cold blood. My main criticism is that the whole subplot of Paxton and Williams kind of undercuts the tension of the battle between gangsters and police. The rhythm is broken and it is all way too thick.
