A mediocre film about a successful political advisor who starts working for his friend's successor. It builds up a lot of storylines, but the further development is rather dull. The cast includes quite a few familiar names. Not exactly Sidney Lumet's best film, and better films have been made on the topic of media power in politics.

We! Together! have achieved a historic moment in politics!

It might not be a particularly good film; the story is a bit long-winded and wanders too much into side issues. I also didn't think Gere fit his role very well, and Washington was actually too young to be convincing. It was nice to see both of them in early roles, roles they really had to dig deep into and put their best foot forward for. This is against veterans like Hackman and Christie, who seemingly can pull off any role without Christie's helmet-like hairdo fading even a millimeter.

Still, the ending is thought-provoking, and then it suddenly becomes clear why Lumet wanted to make this film. Is it an emotion that is timeless, or is it a stroke of genius, or is it the dream of a better world that this ending culminates in? Either way, it's perhaps even more fitting today than it was in 1986.
