A somewhat inferior children's film compared to what else has been released in recent years, because the Netherlands makes some pretty nice children's films in that respect.

This movie is a bit boring in my opinion...not much happens and the humor is also hard to find.

Dikkertje Dap [Liam de Vries] is definitely not eager to go to school. Because that means he can spend a lot less time with his best friend, the giraffe Raf [voice: Yannick van de Velde]. Raf also wonders why he doesn't have to go to school himself. Based on the poem and nursery rhyme by Annie MG Schmidt, this is an unpretentious, but also somewhat thin family film about the first big change in the lives of most children with good acting by De Vries and a pleasantly light-hearted approach.

I have become quite a fan of Dutch youth films in recent years, but Dikkertje Dap is a major disappointment. If a child likes this, the mission has of course been accomplished, because that is ultimately the target group, but for the slightly older viewer this seems to me to be too simple, with colorless characters, bland acting (with the exception of Liam de Vries and Dolores Leeuwin), little plot, and a rather dead animatronic that is also provided with a very colorless voice by Yannick van de Velde. The misunderstanding between grandpa and teacher makes you smile, and the scene with Dikkertje's first day at school is beautifully and very well filmed, but I cannot find anything more good in this, and it certainly lacks the Schwung of the Mees Kees adaptations of this director.
