I found it striking that the cinematic elements are very good. The way the shots are taken, viewing angles, etc. I really like at many moments; is so well thought out and just suck you into the movie. Sometimes I even forgot that I was watching a musical film and I think that's really genius of the maker(s). In addition, the songs are just fantastically done, and Fagin is surely the crowning glory of this film. What a lonely high class actor.

Musical by Oliver Twist. It was time to dust off this film, which was exactly half a century old the day before yesterday. The film was also honored with 6 Academy Awards. An orphaned child ends up with a thief who wants to use him to steal for him on the street. But when Oliver is adopted by a wealthy citizen , the criminals begin to fear that he will tell them.

Ron Moody is incredible in his role as Fagin. Perfection! The 19th century run-down London is beautifully presented. Only those numerous songs started to disappoint in the second act, although the musical parts are catchy and contribute to a homely atmosphere. There are some choreographies here that really stand out eg just after meeting the Artful Dodger. It's wonderful how all those street performers suddenly all come together as a choreographed ensemble. You have to see the movie for this sort of thing.

Because of the musical happenings, this is a somewhat lighter version of what is a gloomy and sad story about poverty. Not a failure at all; the film looks very good visually and, despite its length, is consistently compelling. It's just a shame that Oliver Twist doesn't really come out well.

Colourful, spectacular and grandiose, and with the nice quirk that Fagin is portrayed here to a certain extent as a sympathetic and sometimes even pitiful character, where the superb portrayal of Ron Moody helps in no small way (apparently Moody already used that angle in the stage version). Unfortunately, we see too little of the formidable Leonard Rossiter as the undertaker, Oliver Reed is of course perfectly in place, and there is little to criticize about the other actors and technicians. However, the points on the negative side are no less important : the songs don't really appeal to me, Mark Lester as the title character is a very good and silky little guy who also gets a terrible singing voice (from a girl dubbed later), and the story actually loses most of its oppression and horror due to all the music, song and dance. All this results in a film that cannot quite live up to its enormous reputation for me.
