A somewhat unbalanced film. Maybe too far from Henry Hathaway's mainstream genre - I really only know him from westerns, of which he's made dozens - including classics like Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit.

The story rattles here and there - and perhaps even worse is that it lacks purpose. Perhaps because of that, however, because reality does not always go directly to the original goal. But it does make it more difficult for the viewer to see an exciting film in it.

Especially the first half is a bit disappointing. Too much voiceover that has to explain the plot, and the plot of the German might have been better left out. But in the second half in France it really starts to get a bit exciting.

And the ending is strong again. Cagney's Homeric laugh ends the story nicely. That's real class.

An exciting war film with an excellent role by James Cagney.
The title of the film refers to a Nazi headquarters in France where Robert Sharkey has to fight for his life.
I myself thought that the identity of the German spy was still well preserved.
All this adds to the tension.
The voice-over at the beginning and in between the film seems rather superfluous to me.

Highly recommended for fans of WWII movies.

Not a Simenon film starring Jean Gabin, this "13, rue Madeleine", but an excellent espionage thriller.

Well-kept structure with many exterior shots and to the prologue, as much as possible at the quoted places.

The training of the Secret Intelligence, the training and working methods of the espionage services and the way in which everything actually seems authentic and really happened are also interestingly portrayed.

Richard Conte plays very well as the "mole" but above all is that hot-tempered little guy called James Cagney, who has so many different roles to his credit.
