Surprisingly strong suspense for a nonsensical film about murderous clowns who terrorize a town with their circus attributes. Take the scene in a fast food restaurant where a little girl happily watches a clown beckon her in a friendly manner, while the viewer has long since figured out what he's up to with a giant toy hammer. Or take the moment when a violent police officer charges a clown to beat him in a police cell. It is immediately clear that the roles will be reversed, but the manner in which it exceeded my wildest expectations. Killer Klowns offers a wealth of ideas of crazy designs and creative set designs with which it conjures up the surreal world of the clowns. Even the dated special effects and abysmal acting seem to be in favor of the film, as it gives the shown madness even more of the cheesy air of a tasty B-movie. A guilty pleasure is so much nicer when there are space clowns in it!

Wonderful nonsense movie.

A clear case of 'what you see is what you get' when something bears the title Killer Klowns from Outer Space. The exact target audience for the film is somewhat vague; on the one hand, the film is a bit too dark for small children, but rather childish for an adult audience. Anyway, for lovers of the wrong cult, it's actually a perfect meal. The film sometimes follows the premise of the original The Blob one-on-one; horny teenagers in cars witness a crashing object from outer space, a pile driver with his dog is the first victim, and the young protagonists find help from a police officer, while another grumpy cop bets it's a prank by a bunch of teenagers. This last figure is a funny role of John Vernon, without doubt the best actor of the company. The rest of the acting is pretty lousy, especially Suzanne Snyder - who plays lead actress Debbie - is far from an acting prodigy.

Anyway, who's going to watch Killer Klowns from Outer Space for the acting? It mainly concerns the title characters, oversized clowns with huge heads. They make for a whole host of nonsense and it's funny how, what or why it never becomes clear. Because well, they're just killer clowns from outer space. They throw pies, throw popcorn, shoot lasers and turn people into cotton candy. It doesn't get gruesome or gross, the film is basically a comedy with some dark moments here and there; just a tad terrifying to the smallest of viewers. As a big fan of horror comedies and big nonsense, however, this was also a film after my heart. Sometimes it's just wonderful to watch something that is very entertaining, but makes no sense at all.

4 stars.

Better than expected.

But of course it's not really good. The effects are very cheap, the acting is seriously below par and the film really makes no sense at all. But that's exactly what the film manages to handle, by going for the nonsense, 85 minutes long.

The set-up of this film is ridiculous, but the makers just enjoy it. The ideas also remain fresh until the end, the danger with this kind of film is that it starts to collapse around halfway through. Just then Chiodo takes this one step further.

Can chuckle several times and often looked with appetizing sense at the nonsense that was served here. Didn't expect much from it beforehand, these kinds of films are often more fun on paper than in reality, but this one has earned its cult status doubly. Although the humor has to suit you and you have to be able to see through some lesser elements.

3.0*
