Watched this movie for the 3rd time now and it continues to hold up well and that's because I recognize so much of myself in this movie. As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, the female protagonist must suit me. I must have the same feeling about that as Tom should I encounter such a woman in real life. Well, I would definitely fall in love with a Summer like that. But... now it comes, what are you in love with, Summer or the fantasy you create around Summer. I think on the latter. If that does not correspond to reality, then the whole infatuation collapses. We see that in this film, among other things, aptly shown in the splitscreen scene where we see Tom's happy expectations of a meeting with Summer on the left and the extremely painful reality on the right. Yes, that's how it often goes. That has happened to me several times too. That's why even though I'm crazy about women, I'm extremely afraid of falling in love. The latter puts me completely out of my mind, because your mind cannot put an end to that infatuation. It just happens to you. The feeling is stronger than the mind. So, don't resist and hope it just goes away.
We see that this film also has a clear philosophy in one of the last scenes where Tom accidentally meets during a job application.. Chance? Yes, we hear in the voice-over. Everything that happens is a coincidence and that is generally true. But... I say, I feel like I can't see something as coincidence but something that had to happen. However, this is 100% subjective, only applies to me and which cannot be put into words further, because this will sound nonsensical to the other person.
In short:
(500) I don't see Days of Summer at all as a rom-com but rather a philosophical film about love. But this too is 100% subjective. If you don't recognize yourself in it, everything stops of course.

Rating: unchanged 5.0*

Nice film that is, however, a bit long-winded – the film has little variation or development – but which also earns bonus points for being one of the few successful comedies about heartbreak (and being kept on a leash) with fun sub-themes such as whether true love exists , whether there is predestination or everything is coincidence and about the difference between people who don't commit because they want to do what they want and people who want to commit.

“Just because she likes the same bizzaro crap you do doesn't mean she's your soul mate.”

You can call (500) Days of Summer a tragic romantic comedy. Tom (Gordon-Levitt) sees his dream girl in Summer (Zooey Deschanel) and does everything he can to win her heart. There's one problem, Tom believes in love and Summer doesn't. But hey, they like the same music, share their deepest secrets and have a good time together anyway, so that one obstacle shouldn't be a problem, right?

That it is not so easy in practice is made clear in an original and inventive way by Marc Webb. The jumps in time ensure that you, just like Tom, end up on a roller coaster of emotions. One minute you're watching a Tom dance to a song because he and Summer spent the night together for the first time, and the next he's falling into a black hole because Summer broke up. But the film never gets too heavy, even though the emphasis is more on the cracks in the relationship than the loving moments. Webb knows how to keep the tone light and is helped by the inspired playing of Levitt and Deschanel. In addition, the other actors such as Moretz and Gregg are also doing well. If the music is also very well chosen, then you have a film that turns out a lot better than the average dramedy due to the fresh approach, charming protagonists and smart direction. And the last scene shows that after a broken relationship, there is hope again for Tom on the horizon. Especially if that hope looks like Minka Kelly.
