A young woman, Karin, suffers from a mental and incurable illness. She spends the holidays on a remote island with her husband, a doctor, her father who writes novels and her younger brother. When her illness worsens, Karin thinks she will meet God. This also encourages her loved ones to think about their lives and about God.

The weakest Bergman I've seen so far. The visuals are just slightly less beautiful than in his other films, and the symbolism is a bit more prominent. But when you have a film told in a rather cold manner, I'm not particularly interested in all of that. What remains is a fairly decent portrait that never truly comes to life, however, because this is a film for the mind and not for the heart. There is nothing wrong with the former, but the latter is certainly missing. The acting reflects this. Not actors with lived experience, but rather people reciting their lines without any real soul. Although Andersson was the only one who really didn't appeal to me and leaned too much towards overacting, the rest were at least believable. 3.0*.

The minister's son Bergman wrestles—and has his characters wrestle with—God. To Karin, he appears merely as a hideous fever image; for Martin, God does not exist; Minus does not even consider God a possibility until he thinks he needs him when Karin is in a crisis; and the detached and observant David finds God precisely in and through his loneliness. What do the three men see in Karin's breakdown, what is reflected in her for each of them? For Martin, the loss of reason; for David, the failure of his writing; for Minus, the mystery of her femininity? At the same time, these characters are not merely bearers of these and other ideas, but also, and above all, recognizable people of flesh and blood who find themselves in a crisis. It is impressive how Bergman manages to make his chamber music simultaneously so formal and almost theatrical, and so passionate—when Martin tries to convince Karin in bed that her illness is not necessarily incurable, he briefly strokes her nose with his—a beautiful detail.
Seven years after this film, Björnstrand and Anderson played Professor Higgins and Eliza Doolittle in an adaptation of Pygmalion for Swedish television. Unfortunately, I've never seen it, but it looks amazing to me. (Definitely the other extreme, of course.)

A typically tough but interesting film by Ingmar Bergman, about a mentally ill young woman (Harriet Andersson) who spends her vacation on a remote island with her husband, her father, and her younger brother. When her illness worsens, her loved ones are forced to reflect on their lives and on God. Atmospherically filmed and beautifully acted, although the characters remain quite distant.
