Micmacs à Tire-larigot plot

"Non Stop Madness."

Years ago, Bazil's father died defusing a bomb in the middle of the Moroccan desert, his mother became completely deranged and Bazil was sent to an orphanage. Now the grown Bazil is working at a video store when, by a freak accident, he is hit in the head by a bullet. He survives the accident but the bullet remains, with strange side effects as a result. When Bazil loses his job because of this, that's enough. He is fed up with the arms industry, of which he and his father are victims. Together with his newfound friends, Bazil devises a brilliant plan to destroy the two weapons manufacturers.

Everything shows that it is a Jeunet film, but that is only good. The characters are colorful and, as usual, it's crammed with nonsensical tidbits. The humorous view of the fact that the "civilized" western countries facilitate the wars in the third world and the middle east works, but you have to be careful not to become too much of a pedantic finger, especially towards the end of the film.

The humor is sometimes a bit too simple, too grotesque, too easy, but in general it is actually witty.

Nicely done film (use of color, locations) in the style of Amélie and Un Long Dimanche, just like the characters that show up. But here I think the latter is too much of a good thing, too made, it wants too much. Although I didn't get all the puns, I don't like the other much used humor (very physically focused). It's also lavish; after seeing the snake girl crawling out of a box or fridge about six times I know.

I think it's endearing, at least, just Bazil and that old man, but not witty in general. I think the only really successful scenes in that regard are the imitation of the kidnapping/airplane and window cleaning. I had all expected a bit more from it, in the end it is a rather bland circus in a beautiful tent (the visual decoration).

Oh well, after Amelie we stayed away from Jeunet for a while, actually because we feared that a second Amelie was in the offing ... beautiful film, but so sweet that we feared an overdose. Fortunately, Micmacs is a bit grimmer and more reminiscent of The City of Lost Children. Beautiful scenery again and then the story about the garbage dump residents who compete against two arms dealers may be somewhat naive .... we all know who the bad guys actually are ... well Melchemie was a 10-minute walk from my home ... it's not all that far.

Nice comic fairytale and was that Dutch: mooispul mooispul mooispul?
