It is remarkable that here a Japanese judoka is first allowed to throw an American sailor into the water and then knock out a celebrated American boxer - apparently the American occupier had no problem with that. The rest of the film is indeed more or less a lukewarm continuation of the first part, but with the Higaki brothers you still have two worthy opponents, one the resentment incarnate, the other made up as a ghost including long hair and a painted mouth. The climactic fight in the snow is indeed beautiful (although also a bit too theatrical, including a tree that breaks dead in the middle after a karate blow but was clearly sawn in advance), and the ending (when you don't know what the epileptic is going to do with that knife do) is still creepy. Incidentally, the visit of the dying Gennosuke is also wonderful: he has deteriorated to such an extent that he is almost transparent. Still a lot of beauty in a film that Kurosawa has a lower opinion of than I do.

Continue but in contrast to the tight first part very messy. Clearly the message here is more important than the quality of the film (although the theme reminded me a bit of Rocky IV against the Russians). There are some separate moments that need to be shown that don't necessarily belong together. Visually also little fascinating to discover. The pace is still fine, so the film is still quite manageable, but that's about all. Sometimes the film also felt like a silent film in terms of images, the film really looks 20 years older. 2.0*.
