Gossip spreads when lonely and recent war widow Jessica Drummond turns out to be in a relationship with the attractive military major Scott Landis, whom she met on a skiing holiday with her friend Ginna Abbott. Jessica gets into trouble with her kids when they learn of her affair with Scott and the kind but dull Frank Everett, who is in love with her.

I can't help but agree with dutchfan; Barbara Stanwyck is one of those actresses who comes across as very sincere and likeable, and her acting talent is always very convincing in these kinds of roles.
The story is indeed quite simple, but told with great emotional maturity; the way the norms and values are portrayed makes you realize how much has actually changed in 75 years.
