A film that deserves more attention. Brilliant cinema, with flair, melancholy, passion and humor that one hardly ever encounters anymore. Comparisons with Fellini are rightly made I think (and why not La Grande Bellezza?), but only do so when you are forced to make new viewers think in a certain direction.

Because Kusturica is a phenomenon in itself, and the Balkans have a story of their own, and the two mix here for an epic display.

Central, as is often the case with the man, is a gypsy family that is first introduced extensively. Grandson Perhan is the hero of the story, who has to save the family despite all the poverty, drunken relatives, greedy neighbors and other scum in his environment. But he too seems slow, and (so it seems) born of necessity to give in to a criminal life.

So far an average story as one can encounter more often. Kusturica, however, films with such a sense of drama and fantasy and knows how to use traditional Balkan music so beautifully that it acquires an epic character. Beautiful scenes to dream away with, such as that party on the water in the beginning, very beautiful. And this is cinema you won't see anywhere else, flamboyant, imaginative and compelling, and at the same time the melancholy shit-to-everything undertone that is so characteristic of the Balkans.

In most of Kusturica's films, the latter is often the point of criticism, especially when it concerns the humor used, which is sometimes very banal. This is particularly noticeable in Black Cat, White Cat. If not here though, this movie is much more serious and balanced. The only thing that can be blamed on Kusturica here is perhaps that he occasionally loses himself in ambiguities. And maybe it's all a bit stretched out, but in the end I just like it better in the second part.

As far as I'm concerned with Underground Kusturica's best. And with less than 150 votes, that could get a little more attention.

You have those films that seem indelible in your memory because of the penetrating to shocking depiction of a group of people and their lifestyle and behavior. "Brutti, Sporchi e Cattivi" is one of them, but this "Dom Za Vesanje" can safely put his foot next to it.

Kusterica really does much more than shock. He turns it into a varied spectacle, a mixed bag of sadness and misery, human weakness and doggedness, symbolism, fantasy and imagery, mischievous humour, in short, full scenes in which the danger of missing something is not imaginary.

A very special, appreciable film that is also favored with a wonderful soundtrack.

This film also reminded me a lot of Brutti, Sporchi e Cattivi and Fellini, especially Amarcord. The cheerful chaos of Kusturica abounds again. I can appreciate that sometimes, but it also gets tiring quite often. Especially with this long playing time.

In terms of design, the level of Black Cat, White Cat is not yet reached, but you are definitely already seeing the signs. It is mainly the very typical Balkan/Gypsy atmosphere that lingers and has undoubtedly become very iconic.

Also wondered how this work has fallen in the Roma community. I don't think Kusturica has anything to do with it? Would this objectification be very sensitive nowadays...

PS the actress who plays Azra eventually became a researcher in the Netherlands after the Yugoslav war. Special story.
