Of course it's all meant to be comical and all, but I don't think there are many films that portray the filthy squalor of the Middle Ages as aptly as Jabberwocky does. How often is that time not portrayed in a romanticized way, as if it were fun to live back then?

That wonderful time we all long for, right? Delicious shit in a bucket; lice and fleas in every bed; nice girls too....with a tooth and a half; and everyone smelled so good from under their armpits and of course also from their waffle, because the toothpaste was almost invented (only a few hundred years of patience).

Of course I wasn't there, but I think Terry Gilliam had a pretty good idea of what it looked like at the time. I mention, for example, how dark it is always inside the castle. Many a filmmaker (equipped with the most expensive lighting equipment) can learn from that.

One of the few Terry Gilliam / Monty Python movies I've never seen, even though it didn't get great reviews. Young man in the Middle Ages leaves the countryside to the city to save the city from the monster. The story drags on slowly and isn't really funny either. Michael Palin is always fun to watch, but otherwise it is indeed a very mediocre film.

Jesus say .. sue Gilliam I would say. That it is in the Monty Python box. How dare they!

There is no suggestion in the film that it is part of the Monty Python circus. A little research on the world wide web wouldn't hurt either. It's a shame that films like Jabberwocky and Erik The Viking are partly rejected because of it. Jabberwocky also has plenty of wonderful moments in the house. I loved how the king stupidly slaughters his entire army to find THE knight who slays the dragon. It is certainly very well done how the blood spatter on the clothing and faces of the royal family is multiplying at a rapid pace. Of course Jabberwocky is not an impressive monster and the film does indeed look very old-fashioned, but it is mainly about the ridiculously ridiculous medieval scenes. The humor is good here. As well as the beautiful decors. Of course this is not the most accessible or anyway the best film by Gilliam, but it is certainly entertaining, if you give it a chance.
