Mediocre.

When the 80s trilogy was about to be completed, the producers nevertheless saw some money left and decided to work on adding another part. Apparently there was nothing more to do with the story around Macchio and Swank was allowed to take over from him. So this time there is a woman who will learn the art of karate.

The problem is that Swank already knows karate and fighting is replaced by some family drama of the simplest kind. Why Morita also returns for this part is completely beyond me. Of course there is no Karate Kid without Morita, but as an actor he is too charming to participate in this kind of nonsense. The morals he tries to teach are also constantly contradicted, so it doesn't make much sense anymore.

Visually simply boring. The fight scenes don't look like much and the charm it has is mainly due to the environment. They always manage to create the world with the same charm, regardless of a new location or not. That immediately keeps the film watchable, so that the 107 minutes don't exactly feel like a task. Fortunately too.

Furthermore, there is no tournament this time but just a short fight towards the end. The rest of the film is about training and learning, which is not portrayed very impressively. That thing with the monks didn't make sense at all. It should be clear that creativity was no longer an issue during this film. Unfortunately, because the movies from the 80s were beautiful pieces of film from my childhood.

No, it's clear why this turned out to be a flop. It's just an unnecessary movie. I didn't think Macchio was great at the time, but Swank at least plays him nicely. Nevertheless, it remains Morita who time and again manages to distinguish himself from the others, but he cannot take this project on his shoulders. Director Cain puts a stop to that by not taking his character seriously. Unfortunately.

The Next Karate Kid is a real flop for me. Pat Morita and the pan flute music still do some good, but the story is so horribly boring that nothing really gets off the ground. Somewhere so many years later you would think it could be a little louder, but instead it was almost a teletubbies broadcast.
