Okja plot

Lucy Mirando hopes to solve the future food problem by having 26 so-called 'super pigs' raised by 26 traditional farmers from different regions. After ten years, they want to determine the best way to breed these creatures for meat consumption. Mija grows up with one of the lab animals she calls Okja. But then a delegation from Mirando comes along to take Okja to New York where Lucy will personally determine which super pig is the most ideal. Mija decides to follow and rescue Okja with help from the unconventional activists of the Animal Liberation Front.

strong.

A film that holds up a decent mirror and deals serious blows to the meat industry. Incredibly clever how so many heavy themes come together in what initially feels like a children's film. Okja says something about our dealings with animals, nature, hypocritical PR departments, the holocaust and greed, but starts and ends small and silent. And then there is also something left and right to laugh. Very nicely done. Acting is sometimes a bit dull, but that was the intention. Found Paul Dano very strong as always.

To be honest, I didn't feel like eating meat at all. So the film has already succeeded in that regard in terms of message. The terrible images of recent months about animal suffering in the meat industry here in Belgium kept popping into my head. So the content is also very up to date. Now, everyone makes up their own mind about this, but what is certainly a fact is that the animals must not suffer in a terrible way.

That barbaric manner should not be of this time. Back to the film because it was quite well put together in terms of action, fantasy (the created creature), content, beautiful images, soothing scenes, cultural differences....all nicely balanced. Can't really criticize it. Only the filling of certain roles could have been better. Gyllenhaal really didn't come across and I didn't find the young lead actress Seo-Hyeon Ahn convincing either. Nice film with a clear message and that's okay. 7/10

Strong anti-capitalist parable. Or how the cute monster Okja (a hybrid between a hippo and a pig) forms a metaphorical indictment against the meat industry. About the desouling of living beings for mass consumption and the wafer-thin layer of social consciousness with which it is sold as something good. Marketing and image more important than sustainable solutions against animal suffering. Only teenage girl Mija (Seo-Hyeon Ahn) sees right through that hypocrisy when her Okja turns out to be specifically created for an American advertising campaign. During Mija's search for her friend, she encounters all kinds of colorful characters such as nonviolent animal rights activists, split businessmen and a Steve Irwin with a midlife crisis. South Korean Joon-ho Bong deviously plays with the expectations and clichés of a family film, but both Mija and the viewer are aware of a bitter, cruel reality. Like a sledgehammer with which 'Okja' (2017) confronts what is actually taken from living beings with their own consciousness.
