Mediocre film in which a number of people try to get a camper to a car show in Amsterdam on time. The dialogues are sparse and the film has to rely on physical humor. Slow, slightly absurdist and rather dry (it has to suit you). Still a few nice moments such as the demonstration of the camper and the big car accident.

This week I got my Tati Blu-ray box out, after having only seen two films from it four years ago and, to be honest, having been a bit disappointing after all these years (I first saw them in the mid-80s on the Belg Frans).

Started with this Trafic and it again has all the features of a typical Tati:

hardly any story and without any form of tension arc, in which we mainly watch with amusement at all kinds of caricatures of people, through which Hulot manages to maneuver, with the special feature this time that he now comes up with an invention himself (namely a super-modern camper, or what should pass for one) instead of being amazed by the modern technology of others, as in previous films.

A bit of a mixed film, beautifully and typically Tatianly shot, but I think it could have been more about the experiences on the highway to the Netherlands instead of entire sections at the workshop and customs, which brought the story to a standstill even more.

For us Dutch people it is of course extra nice that the Netherlands and the AutoRai are included and to see all those now old-fashioned cars from my early youth.

Model and beauty Maria Kimberly is a revelation, because she plays so wonderfully natural and how beautiful and charming she is! She single-handedly saves this film for me, with her delightful persona!

The so-called nose-picking scene was not necessary for me, it made me feel a bit nauseous!

For now a six, or three stars.

Nice, but by far the least Tati had made up to that point. After the commercial flop Playtime, Tati was almost bankrupt and for commercial reasons this became a Hulot film, which was not the intention at first. He was supposed to make the film together with Haanstra (they felt connected to each other), but he dropped out (after filming some scenes in the RAI) mainly because Tati also seemed to have little interest in it and was unreachable. The same applied to Lasse Hallstrom at a later stage. After the flop Parade, Tati would never get anything off the ground again.
