I have decided to temper my expectations for the Denis's a little from now on, because this, just like the equally disappointing Les Salauds, was again painfully unimpressive.

Especially boring as hell, the salty characters and their needless worries couldn't really bother me. My disinterest set in after half an hour, so sitting through the film was not without a hitch. Les Salauds already suffered from the same problem, in contrast to the great Trouble Every Day, which was immensely intriguing. Perhaps a coincidence, but for the time being I don't feel like struggling through the rest of Denis's oeuvre. With her past two films in mind.

Still, the opening scene is worth watching and is often beautifully, clinically shot, but that usually didn't stop me from letting out a few big yawns. I don't have much against a detached approach, as it worked out very well in Trouble Every Day, but I just found this boring and almost without atmosphere.

Snore-fest of size. 1.5*.

Claire Denis was partly inspired by Banshun by Yasujirô Ozu. She based the intimate father-daughter relationship on her mother's relationship with her grandfather, who raised her as a single parent. She started writing the script in 2004. This at the same time as the script for White Material. Post-production on both films also took place simultaneously. Humbert Balsan was initially assigned to produce the film. Unfortunately, he committed suicide on February 10, 2005. The recordings took about six weeks. This was the film debut for actress Mati Diop. The role of Lionel was written for Alex Descas.

A film of infinite tenderness in which the lives of the characters are subtly intertwined. This is to build a tapestry of interconnectedness that marks the inevitable passages of life. Not for everyone.

Really not my thing.

The story just about didn't grab me anywhere, and the idea of celebrating with 35 glasses of rum couldn't be further from me. To drown my sorrows, yes - but are 35 remotely enough, and I would like to count the glasses. As the old wisdom says, two is too many and twenty is not possible - or was it the other way around.

For a moment it seems as if Denis has something to do with the cat. Ni de fleurs, ni de couronne, il est creve, c'est all. But even that doesn't come across as real anywhere - although none of my cats have died in their sleep, that's not how you do it. Not if you're a normal, even remotely credible human being.
