Nice film in which a rich man wants to take over the land of a female rancher. A western set towards the end of this era. Very slow, not only the film itself but also the development of the story. Plenty of beautiful images, especially the cattle herding is well depicted.

Indeed, it reminds me a bit of Days of Heaven by Malick as I read here. It is a quietly moving western about a cowboy and a single landowner (heiress) who grow closer and are stronger together to survive as cattle ranchers. The word "cowboy" can be interpreted literally because it is indeed about cattle herders and not about adventurers who end up in all kinds of sticky situations with robbers and other scum.

On the one hand, it is an atmospheric drawing of the last cowboys in America, around the 1940s, with some vintage cars in the background. The period of the Wild West had been over for a while, but there were still farmers in remote places who continued the way of life of the past. Ella Connors is also such a woman, a tough, silent aunt who has learned to be careful with other people and devotes herself to her livestock. We also see that industry is gradually replacing traditional agriculture with oil prospects.

The relationship between Ella and Frank is well depicted and is based on trust but also on having a shared vision of running the business. Caan and Fonda are two charismatic actors and their acting together takes the film to the next level. Farnsworth can always be there too, as the old farmhand. Robards plays the selfish villain who wants to take over the land of his smaller neighbors at all costs. There is very little action, but a good western can also rely on simplicity and relaxation (the setting is beautiful!) and I certainly find that here. This is a great western.
