Good film in which a man chases a family because he is convinced that their daughter is the reincarnation of his previously deceased daughter. Although it is sometimes a bit repetitive, the whole thing remains quite interesting. Some scenes certainly contain horror/thriller elements, but because of the fairly serious approach to reincarnation this is more of a drama.

The name horror does not necessarily mean that you have to crawl under your chair in fear every two minutes. If a story is about disturbing paranomal phenomena, it always falls under horror.

Inevitably a comparison is made here with The Exorcist, partly because in both cases it concerns an underage girl. However, Ivy (Susan Swift) is not possessed by the Devil, but she is the reincarnation of Audrey Rose, the deceased daughter of Elliot Hoover (Anthony Hopkins).

Child actress Susan Swift does a great job, especially when she is under hypnosis and undergoing regression therapy. Although I don't believe in reincarnation at all, Anthony Hopkins manages to make the subject plausible. This is called Suspension of disbelief. Marsha Mason plays a character undergoing change. Initially she sees Hoover as a dirty man and wants to protect her child from him, but gradually she becomes convinced that he is not as crazy as he seems. The trial includes a few nice supporting roles for good TV actors of that time: John Hillerman (Higgins in Magnum) and Robert Walden (Rossi in Lou Grant).

What struck me was the beautiful English of Frank de Felitta, who based the script on his own novel.

Sporadically exciting but often rather dull reincarnation drama, with Anthony Hopkins as a father consumed by grief who becomes convinced that the soul of his deceased daughter has returned. The calm structure is attractively done and quite interesting, but as soon as the plot gets bogged down in a heavy-handed lawsuit, the whole thing can hardly be taken seriously. In terms of quality, it clearly does not fall into the same category as its peers Rosemary's Baby and The Exorcist. And the film is certainly not scary at all.
