"Who decides what makes a mother?"
Khaila Richards, a drug-addicted mother, leaves her newborn child in a cardboard box in an alleyway in Chicago. The baby is found several hours later and taken to hospital. The baby is clearly fighting for his life. The social worker Margareth Lewin cares about the poor baby's fate and some time later he is adopted by her and her family. Meanwhile, Khaila Richards is arrested for shoplifting. During her stay in prison she starts a drug addiction program together with some other inmates. Three years later, Khaila is released from prison. When she tries to rebuild her life, she learns that her son is still alive and raised by a white family. Attorney Kadar Lewis represents Khaila when she wants her child back.
