I can remember that this film never really excels and doesn't stay really interesting the full running time.

Well, these kinds of films just have to come from the east, then they already have a point for it anyway.

Not a movie I'll ever watch again, besides that action isn't really my genre I must say.

No idea what McTeigue is trying to do here. Begin promises a very different film than what you are served. Rather silly choice to let it start so explosively, with a lot of (CGI) blood and cheesy characters, and then turn it into an annoyingly predictable and average action/thriller with an awful lot of flashbacks. Doesn't exactly encourage watching more of McTeigue, though all of his films seem to have potential (to provide at least basic entertainment). He can't do that here... and that's great.

Well okay.

The opening scene was by far the best scene for me, although it sets the tone a bit and is therefore misplaced. It seems from that opening that the entire movie will be full of flying limbs and over the top CGI bloodshed.

The latter was often present, because the blood flows freely around. McTeigue never pulls the brakes in bloodshed and because of the special way of splashing it remains fun to watch. Therefore, in terms of action, this is quite successful.

Unfortunately, all this spectacle does not hide the fact that the acting is poor and after the opening the film becomes a lot more boring. (That's why it's misplaced). Rain knows little to do with his character except make weird head movements. Harris also does not know how to get the most out of her role.

After the opening, the flashbacks that are constantly shown are simply boring and a bit drowsy actually. The love between the young Raizo and Kiriko is again so predictable and standard that you can't really take anything seriously anymore.

The film also tends to take itself a bit too seriously, but luckily there are liters of blood flowing to often hide this a bit. Enjoyed the rest.
