Aretha undergoes a crisis of confidence: she is overworked, has no boyfriend, finds no goals to live towards and all her friends leave Brisbane. She wants to leave herself but is stopped by Michael, a platonic friend. Michael thinks people leaving Brisbane are imitators who follow the crowd. He is happy in Brisbane, has a stable job and has sex with Stephanie, his ex-girlfriend from a previous relationship. In short, he lives in a daily grind. Anthea's temptation to leave Brisbane increases with the imminent departure of her flatmate Kath.
