Krysar plot

The village of Hamelin has fallen into disrepair. People only care about money and social standing. The streets are being polluted with what people leave behind. This leads to a massive rat infestation. The now desperate city officials do not know what to do with the plague. Then suddenly a stranger enters the city and slowly the rat problem seems to be getting less. The film is an adaptation of the well-known "the Pied Piper of Hamelin".

Rather mediocre.

Visually a very special style. The woodwork that serves as the basis for the stop-motion looks pretty cool, more could certainly have been done there. It looks a bit like the German expressionist films from the 1920s, but in animation form.

Unfortunately, the film itself is a lot less. Mediocre animation and fairly poor camera work do not do the visual style justice. Furthermore, the story is on the dull side (probably told a little too often) and the soundtrack is more annoying than adding atmosphere. Not exactly what you hope for with a film like this.

It's a good thing that the film is rather short, but on the other hand, I found the second part quite dragging. This is mainly because the film itself was not interesting enough. Barta is a nice puppet maker, but unfortunately he does a lot less well as a director.

2.0*

Fantastically made, very much after the example of German Expressionism, such as Faust: Eine Deutsche Volkssage (1926), also such a beautiful movie.

The story may be well known, but with today's youth I don't know it just yet - and as far as I'm concerned it still makes sense (pun intended). In my opinion the soundtrack fits perfectly, exciting and mysterious, but again it probably depends on what you are looking for.

Not much else to report, it goes without saying. If you like ('old-fashioned') animation, then you must have seen this once.

I've seen several by Jiří Barta, but this one takes the cake so far. Big 5 stars.
