I'm facing a similar dilemma as Reinbo. The visuals are fantastic, the colors pop off the screen, and the designs are overwhelming, but it's all so chaotic, busy, overblown, and unfunny, especially the characters, that I can't connect with it. Many early scenes, despite the visual splendor, were simply dull, which is odd, because I generally prefer style over substance. Only as the girl becomes more important does it become more captivating, but otherwise, it's one big circus full of clowns, and I find that absolutely appalling.

3*, because of the visuals and the girl, but without that, it would certainly have been a much lower rating. Nakashima is fishing in the same pond as Jeunet, who, in my opinion, does a slightly better job.

A-ma-zing!

This film is one big rainbow, and the splendor of colors and shapes seems endless. The story is deeply moving. The fairy tale parallels and intersects with reality.

It is not without reason that a frog plays a leading role here.

Some quotes from the internet:
"The frog is a symbol of transformation, renewal and rebirth, and of inner healing."
"The frog symbolizes sensitivity, medicine, hidden beauty and strength
The frog connects the elements of water and earth, and with its croaking and hopping, it brings joy and healing. It guides you to the sacred spring where you can refresh and renew yourself. As a cold-blooded creature that lives partly on land and partly in water, the frog has incredibly sensitiveskin, which shamans believed was magical. As a companion of the rainspirits, the frog can help you become more sensitive to others, to heal..."

And this wasn't the only symbolism in this film. On the contrary.

What if you were born again every morning? And then it also turned out to be birthday?

Well, a children's film? It's audiovisually aggressive, with lots of screaming and even frightening characters like that vampiric nurse and that suicidal crybaby. There's little peace in this fantasy film. The more sensitive moments must come from the Scrooge-like protagonist, Onuki, who bonds with a girl named Paco... Behind that girl, there's also a deeply tragic story. A lot of cheesiness from all the actors (who, despite trying so hard), which can't even be called funny. But with the candy-colored film and the mix of animation and live action, this work definitely has its own imaginative character. The first Nakashima film I like is yet to come, because, like Kanako and Confessions, I found this one very difficult to digest...
